Evaluation of Phosphatic Clay Disposal and Reclamation Methods. Volume 1: Index Properties of Phosphatic Clays

02-002-003Final

Abstract

The results from soil mechanics index tests on twelve phosphatic clays and three sand tailings from Florida phosphate mining areas are presented. The index properties determined for each clay include the plasticity characteristics (Atterberg Limits), particle size distribution, specific gravity and activity. The viscous properties of phosphatic clays determined with a Brookfield viscometer are also evaluated. The supernatent or pore fluid of each clay are characterized by pH and specific conductance. The solid contents of the twelve phosphatic clays as sampled from settling areas, pilot plants, primary launders and secondary launders are also presented. The index properties determined for the twelve phosphatic clays sampled for this investigation were compared with existing published data on the index properties of phosphatic clays. The ranges and averages for the index properties of the twelve clays agreed with existing data.
