Abstract
The consolidation behavior of seven phosphatic clays was investigated via six slurry consolidation tests, seven conventional consolidation tests and two constant rate of strain consolidation tests. Highly plastic phosphatic clays displayed a higher void ratio, lower solids content, and greater compressibility at the same effective stress than clays of lower plasticity. The coefficient of permeability of phosphatic clays generally conformed to expected behavior with the higher plasticity clays displaying a lower coefficient of consolidation and plasticity was evident. Both the total void ratio and the compressibility at a given effective stress are decreased by addition of sand to the clay.
