Waste Clay Disposal in Mine Cuts

Abstract

Accurate measurements of the field dewatering behavior in a test pit were made over a period of one and a half years. The calculated weight of clay in the test pit based on the sampling programs and based on pumping data are in good agreement. Field and laboratory measurements of the compressibility and permeability of the test pit clay are in good agreement. This research has shown how to simulate consolidation of waste clay in mine cuts. However, due to the differences in clay properties, geometry, and other factors, the optimal disposal system must be evaluated individually for each mine situation.
